FJY18 Let Your Light Shine
This is the third year the Fijian Youth Summer Camp has been held attracting campers from a diverse group of youth in the California-Nevada Conference and beyond.
“FJY18” acronym for Fijian Youth 2018, was held form July 10 to 13 at Camp Lodestar. This year’s theme was based on Mathew 5:16 “Let you light shine.”
Though run by the Fijian Caucus of the Conference, classes are conducted in English by the speakers. This year’s speakers include El Camino Real District Superintendent the Rev. Shinya Goto, the Revs. Mahsea Evans and Tikiko Lesuma, and Pastors Monalisa and Langi Lolohea from the California-Pacific Conference as well as Pastor Tevita Koroi.
Two classes ran concurrently for ages 10 to 15, and 16 to 28 on three main topics: Realizing our Source of Light; We are the light of the World; and, Acknowledging God with our Light.
A daily session dedicated to cultural reflection was also popular as campers celebrated their rich heritage. They were also taught weaving fine mats and strings using real “voivoi” or pandanus leaves. Other ethnic groups represented and celebrated at camp this year included Hispanic, Nicaraguan, Asian, Tongan, and Liberian.
Registration this year rose 47% as campers traveled from as far as Seattle, WA.
Organizers plan to have next year’s FJY19 camp as a build up to Youth 2019 in Kansas City, Missouri.
